Call Now: 0333 321 8989Automatic driving lessons in Gloucester are a good fit if gear changes and clutch control are what stress you out. Take both away and you can put your attention on what the test is really about: observation, road positioning and spotting hazards early. We teach automatic lessons right across Gloucester, for complete beginners and for drivers coming back after a break. If you’re likely to drive an automatic or electric car once you’ve passed, it’s also the simplest way to get there.
We start on quiet roads on the edge of Gloucester and build up from there to roundabouts, junctions and busier roads like Eastern Avenue and Bristol Road. If you haven’t driven for a while, we’ll begin with a quick check of where you’re at, then work on whatever worries you most, whether that’s a busy junction or the Over roundabout. Nearer your test, we’ll spend time around Gloucester Driving Test Centre in Quedgeley, so the roads feel familiar on the day. Whatever your starting point, we go at your pace.
Automatic isn’t the only option. If you’d like to see everything else we teach, from manual lessons to intensive courses and refreshers, have a look at our full range of driving lessons in Gloucester.
Every instructor is DVSA-approved or DVSA-registered and CRB/DBS checked, and all lessons are in dual-controlled cars. You’ll pick up good habits from day one.
With no clutch and no gears to think about, you can concentrate on steering, speed and what’s happening around you from your very first lesson.
You’ll get plenty of time on Gloucester’s real roads, including Eastern Avenue and Bristol Road, and around Gloucester Driving Test Centre in Quedgeley.
Lessons fit around work, school or family life, with no extra charge for evenings or weekends. Book a block and it usually works out cheaper per hour than paying week to week.
We’ll chat about your experience and what you want from your lessons, then head to a quiet road to get used to the controls: steering, the accelerator and brake, and moving off and stopping smoothly. Complete beginners and returning drivers are both welcome.
Once the basics feel natural, we move on to roundabouts, junctions and busier roads like Eastern Avenue and Bristol Road. You set the pace, and we won’t push you onto a road you’re not ready for.
Closer to your test, we’ll practise test-style driving and the roads around Gloucester Driving Test Centre in Quedgeley, so you know what to expect. You’ll need to pass your theory test before you can take your practical.
Pass in an automatic and your licence is for automatic cars only, while a manual licence covers both. If you’re likely to drive an automatic or electric car, that’s all you’ll need, and you can always upgrade an automatic licence to a manual one later.
You’re not locked in. If your plans change, you can switch to learning in a manual car or change instructor, and we’ll talk through how that affects the number of lessons you’re likely to need.
Automatic lessons are £43 an hour, or £420 for a block of ten, and new pupils can take their first two-hour lesson for £59. In most cases we can get you started within a week or two, depending on instructor availability in your part of Gloucester.

Bennetts Driving School was founded in Gloucester in 1982 by Michael Bennett. It started with Michael as the only instructor and has grown into a family-run driving school, but Gloucester is still our hometown.
Our Gloucester instructors are registered with the DVSA and teach in dual-controlled cars. Whether you’re a complete beginner, coming back after a break or getting ready for your practical test, your lessons are built around you.
You can ask for a male or female instructor, subject to availability, and we’ll match you with an instructor and lesson times that suit you.
Automatic lessons are £43 an hour, or £420 for a block of ten. New pupils can also take their first two-hour lesson for £59 as an introductory offer. These are our current Gloucester prices and may change, so it’s worth checking when you book.
A lot of learners find it easier to start with, because there’s no clutch or gear changing to think about. You still take the same theory and practical tests, though, and you’ll still need good observation, junction work and road positioning.
Not straight away. A test passed in an automatic gives you a licence for automatic cars only. You can upgrade later by passing a test in a manual car, but if you think you’ll want to drive a manual, it’s worth deciding before you start. We’re happy to talk it through at your first lesson.
Yes. You can switch if your plans change, although deciding early makes it easier to plan a full course of lessons around one type of car.
You’ll normally need to be at least 17 and hold a valid provisional driving licence before you drive on public roads. You can apply for yours from the age of 15 years and 9 months. Once you’ve got it, get in touch and we’ll arrange your first lesson.
In most cases we can get you started within a week or two, depending on instructor availability in your part of Gloucester. If you need to pass quickly for a job or university, ask about our intensive driving course.
